As their name suggests, electric cars require electricity to power and operate the vehicle. Specialized chargers called EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment) chargers — or EV chargers, for short — provide the necessary energy to power these vehicles.
There are three different levels of these charging devices which vary depending on their power and efficiency. These include:
- Level 1 Chargers – This basic charger comes standard with most electric vehicles and can be plugged into your average home electrical outlet which powers at a maximum of 120 volts. While effective in recharging cars, it does so in a slow, inefficient manner, taking upwards of 20 hours to fully charge a depleted battery. They are best used when charging vehicles overnight.
- Level 2 Chargers – This advanced level of charger requires a specialized 240-volt circuit to supply energy to vehicles. They can charge vehicles much faster than a level 1, taking approximately 3 hours to fully charge a dead battery. A growing number of new electric vehicles conveniently come with a level 2 charger upon purchase, but a professional electrician must install the dedicated circuit into your home to allow the charger to safely work.
- Level 3 Chargers – This standalone charger is the one you may notice at public charging stations or in front of certain commercial establishments. They have the power to charge an EV battery in 30 minutes. Because of the amount of power this level of charger requires, it is not suitable to be sold to homeowners, but it can be installed for businesses.
Home Squad has the knowledge and capacity to service all three levels of EV chargers and offer all the required installation work to ensure they safely meet your specific needs.
